How to Make Your Gel Baby Manicure Last: A Complete Guide

Posted by Lana Mushamel on

We’re so excited that you’re using Gel Baby gel polish! A long-lasting, chip-free manicure is the dream, but if you’re experiencing peeling, lifting, or early wear, don’t worry—we’ve got you covered. Most gel issues come down to prep, application, or curing, so let’s walk through the right way to apply Gel Baby for a flawless, long-lasting manicure.

1. Nail Prep: The Foundation of a Long-Lasting Gel Manicure

Think of nail prep like priming your skin before makeup—if your nails aren’t properly prepped, the gel won’t adhere well. Follow these steps for the best results:

Step 1: Start with Clean, Dry Nails

  • Remove any old polish, oils, or lotions from your nails.

Step 2: Gently Buff the Nail Surface

  • Use a fine-grit buffer (180–240 grit) to lightly buff the shine off your natural nails.
  • You’re not trying to thin the nail, just to remove shine so the gel has something to grip onto.

Step 3: Push Back and Clean Cuticles

  • Gel cannot stick to skin! Use a cuticle pusher to gently push back cuticles.
  • If needed, trim any excess cuticle that may interfere with your gel application.
  • Water expands your skin. If any gel is painting over your cuticle or skin, the gel manicure will lift.

Step 4: Dehydrate the Nail

  • Use alcohol or a nail dehydrator to remove any remaining oils.
  • This step ensures your nails are completely oil-free before applying gel.

2. Proper Gel Application: Thin, Even Layers Are Key

Step 1: Apply a Thin Layer of Base Coat

  • Don’t skip base coat! It’s what helps the gel adhere to your natural nail. We recommend our Base-ically Base Coat. It's our tried and true formula for a no-lift manicure.
  • Apply a thin layer—too thick, and it won’t cure properly.
  • Cap the free edge by swiping the brush along the tip of your nail to prevent peeling.
  • Cure under a proper LED/UV lamp (more on that below).

Step 2: Apply Your Gel Color in Thin Coats

  • Apply a Gel Baby Color or Gel Baby Rubber Base Coat next.
  • Less is more! Thin, even layers will cure properly and last longer.
  • If the gel looks streaky after the first coat, don’t worry—the second and third coats will even it out.
  • Cap the free edge of each layer to prevent early wear.
  • Cure each coat fully before moving to the next.

Step 3: Apply a Thin Layer of Top Coat

  • Top coat seals everything in and gives that high-shine, protective finish.
  • We recommend our Talk the Top Coat, as it prevents cracking, staining, and chipping.
  • Apply a thin, even layer and cap the free edge.
  • Cure properly to ensure full hardness.

3. Curing Your Gel: The Right Lamp Makes All the Difference

One of the biggest reasons for peeling or chipping is improper curing. Here’s what you need to know:

Use a High-Quality LED/UV Lamp

  • Not all lamps are created equal!
  • We recommend using a minimum 48W LED/UV lamp for full, even curing.
  • Small, cheap lamps or “flash cure” lamps might not cure the gel fully, leading to peeling.

Proper Curing Times

  • Base coat: 60 seconds (LED) or 90 seconds (UV)
  • Each color coat: 60 seconds (LED) or 90-120 seconds (UV)
  • Top coat: 60 seconds (LED) or 90-120 seconds (UV)

Talk the Top Coat is no-wipe top coat, so you won't experience that tacky layer after fully curing. However, it is recommended to wash your hands after completing your manicure.

4. Bonus Tips for a Long-Lasting Gel Baby Mani

Avoid water before application – Soaking your nails before applying gel can cause premature lifting.
Check your lamp bulbs – If your lamp is older or the bulbs are weak, it might not cure properly.
Seal the edges – Capping the free edge of each layer helps prevent peeling.
Avoid picking at your nails – If you pick or peel your gel off, it will take layers of your natural nail with it!
Use cuticle oil daily – Hydrated nails are stronger nails! Cuticle oil (like Nail Honey) helps keep your nails flexible and prevents breakage.
